Healthy Hearts

As part of our Me, You, and The Big Wide World study we have been learning about healthy eating. Brogan, from the Heart Foundation, has been working with Room 10 and teaching us about the importance of healthy eating and why eating a variety of food is important for keeping our body healthy.

We also learned that what you drink matters too. Our body does not need added sugar, and the best drinks for us is plain milk and WATER!

This photo illustrates the number of teaspoons of sugar in each drink!

The better we fuel our machines (body), the better they will work!

Speed Racer

Today Sharniqua (and RJ from Rm 12) competed in the Soapbox Derby national finals. Despite the threat of rain, it was a beautiful day and both drivers competed well. Sharniqua was clocked at 57km/h in one of her races! Woahzers!!
Both drivers qualified for the semi finals, placing in the top 10. Unfortunately they were eliminated before the final race, not quite making the top 6. We are very proud of both drivers, and the whole team, for all of the effort and skill that they have put into this event! Congratulations Soapboxers!

Auckland Rugby

Karl from Auckland Rugby has been helping us to develop our Rippa skills.
In session one, we learnt how to correctly hold the oval ball, and practiced passing to our left and right.
In session two, we practiced our attacking and defending skills and learnt the rules of Rippa.
Thank you Karl for the fun Rippa sessions.

Here is a bit of attack and defense. Sharniqua takes on Lexus, did she get past? Then Lexus takes on Sharniqua, how did he get on?

ASB Polyfest 2016

Food, friends, fun! What a great day we all had at the ASB Polyfest today. As the largest Maori and Pacific Island festival in the world, there was plenty of colour, flavour, language and dance to enjoy. We visited the sponsors stalls, watched performances and spent the day with our friends and parent helpers. Finally, returning home covered in temporary tattoos and ready for a moe!
Thank you to our AMAZING parent helpers who continually smiled and cared for us throughout the day. Nga mihi nui kia koutou; Tuane, Nyree, Michelle and Roy. Thank you for your never-ending support.

Twinkle, Twinkle

Here are this week's stars!

Tioni received his award for focus and participation. While Hebrew, who is as quiet as a mouse, received his award for being brave and choosing to present his group's ideas in front of the whole class.

Shine on boys!

Our visit to Ika

Armed with our sketching pencils and Art books, Room 10 took a quick trip to the Otara Town Centre. How amazing to see our art exhibition motivation in real life! We got a real feel of the 'scale' of the sculpture and had an up-close look at the art and carvings on the pillars. Here are a few photos from our quick trip:

That looks a bit fishy...

Room 10 have started preparing for our school art exhibition. Here's a sneaky peek...

A Special Visitor

Congratulations Room 10, this week's senior winners of the Assembly Bear. Awarded for great listening and super DANCING in our school assembly today. We look forward to hanging out with Assembly Bear over the next two weeks. Yipeeee!

Totara Park

Wow, what a day! With the sun beaming brightly upon us the whole school escaped the heat of the classroom and went to Totara Park. Despite Room 21 and 10's bus taking the 'scenic route', we all arrived safely.

Room 10 then embarked on a hearty hike through the native bush; listening to tui, investigating empty cicada shells, and observing native plants (like the silver fern).

Following our hike we raced to the playground for a bit of fun! Playing is such thirsty work, it was then lunch time.

After our Kai had settled, we were into the pool faster than you could say heatwave! There we stayed until pack up time!

What a fabulous day! Thank you to our amazing mums, Tuane, Nyree, and Wahine who gave up their day to support us as parent helpers!

This week's Stars!

Congratulations to this week's Star Students, Tevita and Paige.

Showing responsibility and reliability Tevita and Paige have asked to take on the role of overseeing the care of our class netbooks. They check daily that all netbooks are returned and that they are charged and ready to be used again. We appreciate you Tevita and Paige! Thank you sooooooooo much for all of your effort!

Soapbox Derby 2016

What a beautiful day for a drive... but we're not talking about a leisurely Sunday cruise! How about speeding down a steep hill at 55-60km/hr with nothing but a helmet, brake pedal and a few hay bales (just in case).
A team of five drivers and three mechanics representing BMPS and Mainfreight, took to the track today and our Sharniqua was one of them. Under the expert eyes of Mr Lyth, Wayne, Martin, and Shaun and Debs, the team burned a bit of rubber!

Three of the team were in the top 12 after the first heats, and raced off again for a place in the top 6.
Congratulations to RJ (Room 12) who placed sixth, and Sharniqua who placed fourth. They will both now head to Whangaparoa to race the best of the best, and to be in to win top placing- who will race in America!

All the best RJ and Sharniqua for your races in two weeks time.

Look who's in the principal's office!

Last Tuesday, 23rd February 2016, Mr Lyth visited Room 10 to check out the teaching and learning that is happening. He then spoke with four of Room 10's Star Learners. This is what they had to say:

What are you learning about? and Why?

Are you good at writing? How do you know?

What did they have to say about their teacher?
